Death of Ezekiel’s Wife Is a Sign

¹⁵And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ¹⁶“Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you ^(A)what is precious to your eyes with a ^(B)fatal blow; but you shall not ^(C)mourn and you shall not weep, and your ^(D)tears shall not come. ¹⁷Groan silently; do ^(E)no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet, and do not ^[a]cover your mustache, and ^(F)do not eat the ^[b]bread of other people.” ¹⁸So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded. ¹⁹And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are doing?” ²⁰Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ²¹‘Speak to the house of Israel, “This is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, ^(G)that which is precious in your eyes and the longing of your soul; and your ^(H)sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. ²²And you will do just as I have done; you will not ^[c]cover your mustache, and you will not eat the ^[d]bread of other people. ²³Your turbans will be on your heads, and your sandals on your feet. You ^(I)will not mourn and you will not weep; but ^(J)you will rot away in your guilty deeds, and you will groan ^[e]to one another. ²⁴So Ezekiel will be a ^(K)sign to you; according to all that he has done, you will do. When it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’”

²⁵‘As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their ^(L)stronghold, the joy of their splendor, that which is precious in their eyes and their ^[f]heart’s longing, their sons and their daughters, ²⁶that on that day the one who ^(M)escapes will come to you with information for your ears? ²⁷On that day your ^(N)mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and no longer be silenced. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Tyre’s King Overthrown

28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, ²“Son of man, say to the ^[a]leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord ^[b]God says this:

“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘^(A)I am a god,
I sit in the seat of ^[c]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a ^(B)mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
³Behold, you are wiser than ^(C)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
⁴By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired ^(D)riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
⁵By your great wisdom, by your ^(E)trade
You have increased your riches,
And your ^(F)heart is haughty because of your riches—

⁶Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

‘Because you have ^(G)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
⁷Therefore, behold, I am going to bring ^(H)strangers against you,
The ^(I)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
⁸They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the ^(J)death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
⁹Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
¹⁰You will die the death of the ^(K)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God!”’”

¹¹Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ¹²“Son of man, ^(L)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You ^[d]had the seal of ^[e]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
¹³You were in ^(M)Eden, the garden of God;
^(N)Every precious stone was your covering:
The ^(O)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your ^[f]^(P)settings and ^[g]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
¹⁴You were the ^(Q)anointed cherub who ^[h]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy ^(R)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the ^(S)stones of fire.
¹⁵You were ^(T)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until ^(U)unrighteousness was found in you.
¹⁶By the ^(V)abundance of your trade
^[i]You were internally ^(W)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you ^[j]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
¹⁷Your heart was haughty because of your ^(X)beauty;
You ^(Y)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before ^(Z)kings,
That they may see you.
¹⁸By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought ^(AA)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to ^(AB)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
¹⁹All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become ^[k]^(AC)terrified
And you will cease to be ^(AD)forever.”’”

The Empty Tomb

20 ^(A)Now on the first day of the week ^(B)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw ^(C)the stone already removed from the tomb. ²So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other ^(D)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “^(E)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” ³^(F)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. ⁴The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; ⁵and he ^(G)stooped to look in, and *saw the ^(H)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. ⁶So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, ⁷and ^(I)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the ^(J)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. ⁸So the other disciple who ^(K)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. ⁹For ^(L)they did not yet understand the Scripture, ^(M)that He must rise from the dead. ¹⁰So the disciples went away again ^(N)to their own homes.

¹¹^(O)But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she ^(P)stooped to look into the tomb; ¹²and she *saw ^(Q)two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. ¹³And they *said to her, “^(R)Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because ^(S)they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” ¹⁴When she had said this, she turned around and *^(T)saw Jesus standing there, and yet she ^(U)did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵Jesus *said to her, “^(V)Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him away.” ¹⁶Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him ^(W)in ^[a]Hebrew, “^(X)Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). ¹⁷Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^(Y)My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ^(Z)ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” ¹⁸^(AA)Mary Magdalene *came and ^(AB)announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

Jesus among His Disciples

¹⁹Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were ^[b]shut where the disciples were together due to ^(AC)fear of the ^[c]Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and *said to them, “^(AD)Peace be to you.” ²⁰And when He had said this, ^(AE)He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then ^(AF)rejoiced when they saw the Lord. ²¹So Jesus said to them again, “^(AG)Peace be to you; ^(AH)just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” ²²And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. ²³^(AI)If you forgive the sins of any, their sins ^[d]have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

²⁴But ^(AJ)Thomas, one of ^(AK)the twelve, who was called ^[e]^(AL)Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in ^(AM)His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, ^(AN)I will not believe.”

²⁶^[f]Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been ^[g]shut, and stood in their midst and said, “^(AO)Peace be to you.” ²⁷Then He *said to Thomas, “^(AP)Place your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” ²⁸Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” ²⁹Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? ^(AQ)Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

Why This Gospel Was Written

³⁰^(AR)So then, many other ^[h]^(AS)signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; ³¹but these have been written ^(AT)so that you may believe that Jesus is the ^[i]Christ, ^(AU)the Son of God; and that by ^(AV)believing you may have life in His name.
